Oriole: Every New Day – The Observer (review)

by admin. Average Reading Time: less than a minute.

Led by guitarist Jonny Phillips, Oriole are a band of eight musicians from the jazz and Latin music worlds who play together with beguiling empathy. Here, they create an hour of calm, relaxed, fluid music mostly simple in outline but often quite tricky underneath. The unusual blend of tenor saxophone (Ingrid Laubrock) and cello (Ben Davis) is perfect for Phillips’s sweet melodies and the percussion (Seb Rochford and Adriano Adewale) adds the right degree of tension, with Nick Ramm’s piano providing harmonic colour. An unexpected delicacy from a label usually associated with more rugged contemporary styles.
